Not all hosts are created equal.

Choosing the type of hosting can be deceptively easy. Most hosting companies provide the same services, setup the same way. These "traditional" hosting systems fail to address several key issues that will become a problem as any business grows, which is normally the goal when creating and maintaining a web site. There are several new technologies that have addressed many of the infrastructure failings that have plagued this vital piece of the internet since its inception. We will go over the most common types of hosting variations briefly, followed by our take on the different services:

  • ₪ Shared: The vast majority of sites on the internet are hosted in a shared environment. The premise of this option is that web sites are very small and thus a modest computer can handle the serving duties of many sites. Hundreds or even thousands of sites are stored on one computer running one version of an operating system. Every site has to share the resources of one computer.
  • ₪ Virtual Dedicated: In this instance, technically one computer is still being shared between multiple sites, but the number of sites is much smaller, and each division of the computer runs completely separate from its neighbor. This means that the site owner has more control over what can be done with the server, with more control comes more technical skill required to operate the server.
  • ₪ Managed Dedicated: This option allows full control of an entire computer that is correctly formatted and setup in a data center by a professional. All of features and functionality of the entire computer can be customized, with the added support of a technician that is familiar with the general composition of the machine available for help. A fair amount of technical skill is required to ensure operation of the server.
  • ₪ Dedicated: This option is great if absolute control of an entire computer is needed, setup and software are not provided. Additionally significant skill is required to get up and running. Privacy and flexibility are greatest with this solution, multiple servers can be networked together to serve up very large or high traffic sites.
  • ₪ Cloud: Pioneered through the problem solving of several of the biggest tech companies in the world. Hundreds or thousands of computers are tied together in to "cluster" so that they act as one, sharing serving responsibilities. There can be many thousands of web sites on each cluster of computers. The system is highly modular in that more computers can be brought on line or taken out of the system without causing failures because the cluster has duplicated the data on every machine.

General overview of the pros and cons of each system:
